This story shows the necessity of balancing our work with our worship.Here we see two personalities, represented by Martha and Mary. Martha The Doer. Martha was a practical type of person who wanted to get things done. Deep down, she probably wanted to please the Lord, but she made the common mistake of offering work for worship. She recieved Jesus into her house, then neglected Jesus in the process. Jesus wanted her attention, and she offered him a flurry of activity. as a result, she felt tired and overworked. Like Martha, we can become weary in our work for the Lord when we fail to take time to sit at his feet and draw from the spiritual resources available to us. Mary The Worshiper Mary had a balanced life. she recognized that there was a time to work and a time to worship, a time to do and a time to pray. she knew when it was time to take off a apron and converse with this most honored guest. While Martha essentially wanted to "get the dishes done." Mary wanted to seize this wonderful moment to sit at the Creator of the universe. Few things are as damaging to the Christian life is trying to work for Christ without taking time to commune with him. In his letter to young Timothy, the Apostle Paul writes, "Hardworking farmers are the fist to enjoy the fruit of their labor" (2 Timothy 2:6). In other words, you can't effectively feed others until you yourself have been fed. What we do with Christ is far more important than what we do for Christ. Those who strike a balance between work and worship will keep themselves from spiritual burnout and will become more effective in their service to the Lord.

Luke 10:38. Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house. Luke 10:39. And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord's feet and was listening to his teaching Luke 10:40. But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much service; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! Luke 10:41. But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; Luke 10:42. There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her. Moody once wrote, "It is not the jeweled walls and the pearly gates that are going to make heaven attractive. It is being with God."
